Are Hidden Toxins Affecting Your Hormones, Energy, and Long-Term Health?

Many women come into my clinic struggling with symptoms like:

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Hormone imbalance

  • Weight gain

  • Sleep issues

  • Skin concerns

  • Headaches

  • Chronic inflammation

Often, they have already improved their diet, started exercising, taken supplements, and worked hard to improve their health.

Yet they still don't feel like themselves.

One area that is frequently overlooked is environmental health.

In this episode of the Dr. Evelyn Le Ellis Podcast, I sat down with Kim Zangar, also known as Non-Tox Nana, to discuss how everyday household products may contribute to our overall toxic burden and why small changes can have a meaningful impact on long-term wellness.

Who Is Kim Zangar?

Kim Zangar has spent more than a decade helping families identify safer personal care and household products.

Her journey began through her own health challenges, including lifelong allergies and sensitivity to environmental exposures. Through years of research and education, she became passionate about helping others reduce overwhelm and make practical, healthier choices for themselves and their families.

Rather than promoting fear, Kim focuses on education and empowerment.

Her philosophy is simple:

You do not need to be perfect.

You simply need to become aware and make better choices over time.

The Connection Between Environmental Toxins and Women's Health

As a naturopathic physician specializing in women's hormones and longevity medicine, I often explain that hormones do not operate independently.

Hormone health is influenced by:

  • Nutrition

  • Sleep

  • Stress

  • Gut health

  • Exercise

  • Environmental exposures

Many chemicals found in personal care products, fragrances, plastics, and household cleaners may interact with the endocrine system.

While no single product is responsible for a health condition, cumulative exposure over years and decades may contribute to additional stress on the body.

This is especially important during:

  • Perimenopause

  • Menopause

  • Thyroid disorders

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Fertility challenges

  • Chronic fatigue

Why "Clean Living" Doesn't Have to Be Overwhelming

One of the most valuable lessons from my conversation with Kim is that healthy living doesn't require perfection.

Many people become overwhelmed when they learn about environmental toxins because they feel pressured to replace everything immediately.

That approach often leads to frustration and burnout.

Instead, Kim recommends:

Start with one category

Choose one area such as:

  • Deodorant

  • Laundry detergent

  • Cleaning products

  • Personal care products

Make one swap and build from there.

Read ingredient labels

Marketing terms such as:

  • Natural

  • Clean

  • Green

  • Eco-friendly

are not regulated in the way many consumers assume.

Learning how to read labels can help you make more informed choices.

Focus on progress

Small improvements practiced consistently create greater results than attempting a complete lifestyle overhaul overnight.

Environmental Health and Longevity

One of my passions is helping women optimize healthspan—not just lifespan.

Healthspan refers to the years we remain active, vibrant, independent, and capable of enjoying life.

When discussing longevity, most people think about:

  • Nutrition

  • Exercise

  • Sleep

  • Supplements

But our environment also matters.

The products we use every day become part of our health story.

Reducing unnecessary exposures may help support:

  • Hormone balance

  • Healthy aging

  • Cognitive health

  • Immune function

  • Metabolic health

What This Means for Women in Midlife

Many women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are experiencing symptoms they were told are simply "part of aging."

While aging is inevitable, suffering is not.

A comprehensive approach to health considers multiple contributors:

  • Hormonal changes

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Gut health

  • Stress physiology

  • Environmental exposures

This is why functional and integrative medicine looks beyond symptom management and asks deeper questions about root causes.

My Biggest Takeaway From This Conversation

Health is not about fear.

Health is not about perfection.

Health is about awareness.

The more we understand our bodies and the environments we create around us, the more empowered we become to make decisions that support long-term wellness.

You don't have to change everything today.

You simply need to take the next step.
