When Grief Breaks You — and Becomes Your Purpose

A Conversation on Healing, Identity, and Reclaiming Meaning After Loss

Grief has a way of dismantling everything we think we know about ourselves.
It doesn’t ask permission. It doesn’t follow a timeline. And it doesn’t leave us unchanged.

In this deeply human podcast episode, I sat down with Maritza Pierson—women’s empowerment and purpose coach—for a raw and honest conversation about what happens after loss, when the old version of life no longer fits and a new identity hasn’t fully formed yet.

This wasn’t a conversation about “moving on.”
It was a conversation about moving through—and what becomes possible when grief is allowed to transform rather than silence us.

Grief Isn’t the End — It’s Often the Beginning

For many women, grief doesn’t just come from the loss of a loved one.
It can also come from:

  • The loss of identity

  • The loss of direction

  • The loss of health, relationships, or a future we imagined

Maritza’s story begins with profound personal loss—the murder of her youngest sister. In the aftermath, she experienced what many women quietly endure: the collapse of meaning, followed by an unexpected awakening.

One early morning, unable to sleep, she felt compelled to write. What poured out wasn’t just grief—it was clarity. A calling. A realization that while she couldn’t save her sister, she could help other women find their light in dark seasons.

This moment became the foundation of her work today: empowering women to rediscover purpose, rebuild confidence, and step into lives that feel aligned again.

Identity After Loss: Who Are You When Everything Changes?

One of the most powerful themes in this conversation was identity.

Grief doesn’t just hurt—it disrupts who we believe we are. Many women find themselves asking:

  • Who am I now?

  • What matters anymore?

  • How do I move forward without betraying what I’ve lost?

As a naturopathic doctor working with women in midlife, hormone transitions, and life recalibration, I see this identity rupture often. When the nervous system is overwhelmed and the body is depleted, clarity becomes even harder to access.

Maritza and I explored how grief, physiology, and identity are deeply connected—and why healing cannot be rushed or forced into productivity.

When Pain Becomes a Calling

One of the most meaningful takeaways from this episode is this:

Purpose doesn’t always arrive as inspiration.
Sometimes it arrives as devastation.

For Maritza, purpose emerged not by bypassing pain, but by listening to it.
For many women, the desire to help others is born from lived experience—not theory, not credentials, but survival and resilience.

We discussed how:

  • Pain can sharpen empathy

  • Loss can clarify values

  • Stillness can reveal direction

And why women often need permission to trust what they feel drawn toward—especially after trauma.

Lessons Learned the Hard Way

This episode didn’t offer quick fixes, but it did offer wisdom earned through experience:

  • Healing is not linear—and it’s not meant to be rushed

  • Confidence is rebuilt through small, honest choices

  • Community matters more than independence during grief

  • You don’t need to “have it together” to move forward

One recurring theme was the importance of safe spaces—places where women can speak without judgment, without being fixed, and without having to perform strength.

What Helps When You Feel Lost

For women listening who feel untethered or emotionally exhausted, we shared grounded, realistic guidance:

  • Start with unhurried time—moments without productivity pressure

  • Notice what feels heavy instead of avoiding it

  • Seek connection before clarity

  • Allow your body to feel safe again before demanding answers

Healing begins when the nervous system settles. Purpose follows when the body and mind feel supported.

If you’re in a season of transition—emotionally, physically, or both—sometimes the most supportive next step isn’t a big decision, but a gentle reset.

I created a free 7-Day Health Jump Start to help women reconnect with their bodies, stabilize energy, and feel more grounded during times of change.

One Truth Every Woman Deserves to Hear

Toward the end of the conversation, we reflected on one truth we wish every woman knew:

You are not broken because you are grieving.
You are becoming.

Grief does not disqualify you from joy, success, or meaning.
It often reshapes them.
