Wedding Season, Alcohol, and Recovery: A Smarter Way to Celebrate

August 03, 20263 min read

Wedding season is one of my favorite times of the year. It's a season of celebrating love, reconnecting with family and friends, and making lifelong memories.

For many people, however, it also means several days of social events—rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, brunches, and celebrations where alcohol is often part of the experience.

As an integrative medicine physician, I don't believe health is about perfection. It's about making informed decisions. If you choose to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail, there are ways to support your body before, during, and after drinking.

Why Alcohol Feels Different as We Age

Many women notice that alcohol affects them differently in their late 30s, 40s, and beyond.

You may notice:

  • Poor sleep after only one or two drinks

  • Increased hot flashes or night sweats

  • Brain fog the next morning

  • Lower energy

  • More bloating

  • Slower recovery

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can make these effects even more noticeable. Alcohol can also contribute to dehydration and may temporarily affect blood sugar regulation, which can leave you feeling less like yourself the next day.

The good news is that small, intentional habits can make a meaningful difference.

My 6-Step Celebration Recovery Plan

1. Eat Before You Drink

Never drink on an empty stomach.

Aim for a meal that includes:

  • Lean protein

  • Healthy fats

  • Fiber-rich vegetables

This helps slow alcohol absorption and supports steadier blood sugar.

2. Stay Hydrated

Alternate alcoholic beverages with water throughout the event.

Hydration is one of the simplest ways to support recovery and reduce next-day fatigue.

3. Consider a Pre-Alcohol Support Product

One product I often mention to patients who choose to drink is ZBiotics Pre-Alcohol.

ZBiotics contains a genetically engineered probiotic designed to produce an enzyme that breaks down acetaldehyde—a compound produced during alcohol metabolism in the gut. The company states that reducing acetaldehyde exposure in the gut may help people feel better the next day.

While the product has encouraging preliminary research and many positive user experiences, it's important to understand what it does not do:

  • It does not prevent intoxication.

  • It does not allow you to drink excessively without consequences.

  • It is not a substitute for drinking responsibly.

Think of it as one tool that may support recovery—not a replacement for healthy habits.

4. Prioritize Sleep

Alcohol often helps people fall asleep faster, but it commonly reduces sleep quality later in the night.

Before bed:

  • Drink another glass of water.

  • Keep your bedroom cool and dark.

  • Give yourself enough time to sleep.

Quality sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools your body has.

5. Refuel the Next Morning

Instead of reaching for sugary foods, focus on:

  • Protein

  • Fresh fruit

  • Vegetables

  • Electrolytes

  • Plenty of water

A short walk outside can also help improve circulation and support your natural energy.

6. Get Back to Your Normal Routine

One celebration doesn't define your health.

Return to your regular habits:

  • Nourishing meals

  • Movement

  • Hydration

  • Consistent sleep

Long-term health is built by what you do most of the time—not by one weekend.

Celebrate Without Losing Your Momentum

My goal isn't to tell people never to drink alcohol. My goal is to help people understand how their bodies work so they can make informed choices.

Whether you're celebrating a wedding, attending a reunion, or enjoying a vacation, you can care for your health while still participating in life's meaningful moments.

If you choose to drink, a thoughtful recovery plan—including hydration, nutrition, sleep, and tools like ZBiotics—may help you feel more prepared for the next day.
